Betrayal trauma or institutional betrayal trauma occurs when a person, group, organization, or institution that is in a position of trust, violates this trust. Examples of this include individuals experiencing abuse at the hands of a relative, peer, or teacher; institutions such as universities covering up sexual assault; or police officers asking an individual why they waited before reporting an assault. This type of trauma is extremely common but often goes unnamed and unacknowledged. In therapy, we name it for what it is.
